Monroe Christmas Parade December 8 2016
All Scouts should be at the staging area at 5:00pm (Note this is earlier than previously reported)
The Staging area is on Mears street or in the parking lot on South Madison St across from the Old Mill where the Steam Room special events and antique mall is located.
The parade starts at 6:30pm, we are Number 45 out of 75. We are the only Boy Scout Troop in the parade.
Judging is completed before parade starts. Winners can carry trophy on parade. Video recording is in front of the court house.
Scouts should bring 1/2 posterboard with the title and name of the famous Eagle Scout that they selected at the last meeting. The Scout will carry this for the parade.
Scouts need to dress warmly but try to keep uniform on the outside of their clothing.
All scouts should try to have cell phone to help pickup. The organizers wish to prevent floats from stopping at the end on the parade. S Madison will be blocked to allow quick return of the float to the original staging area. Scouts can be pickup from this location.

Troop 81 Year end Blow out!!
Monday December 5 Meeting
Last meeting before YULE LOG the largest Scout gathering of the year. Scouts should come to this meeting knowing whether they can participate in YULE LOG on Dec 9-11. If they are going to this fun Joint Camporee, they must bring $5.00. The admission fee is $5.00 plus at least 4-8 can goods for local food banks during the holidays. This is one of the most fun and exciting events of the year and challenges the scouts in contests using their scouting skills of knot tying, lashing, fire building, etc. A scout should not commit to going and then not show up, especially if they have important additional responsibilities such as grub master for their patrol. This places a great burden both on the patrol as well adult leaders to compensate for that Scout's absence.
Thursday December 8 Monroe Christmas Parade
The Scouts did a great job decorating the Troop 81 parade float on November 28. For the parade Scouts need to try to have their class A uniform ready for this event. (No sashes) Please try to have current patches and troop numbers installed. "8" and "1"s will be available at the next meeting for scouts who have not picked these up at the scout store. Scouts should try to dress warmly with compression wear so the uniform is on the outside. Obviously if it is really cold, coats and gloves and hats should be worn. They should wear good shoes in case everyone can't fit on the float. Pending further changes, all scouts should meet at the old mill assembly on south Broad Street area at 5:30, The parade starts at 6:30-7:00. Scouts can either be picked up at the City administration building at the end of the parade or back at the mill staging area. Please have someone present to sign them out so we don't lose anyone in this often chaotic scene.

Troop 81 Chicken BBQ is here!
This a big fundraiser for the troop and even though we have been talking about this for months, only 6 scouts signed up for shifts to help with this event. We cannot offer a successful troop if the boys are not willing to step up and contribute their time and effort. The first shift is 5am for those cooking the chicken. We need more scouts at 10am to package and distribute to dinners. The early birds should wear class B uniforms, the later 10am shift should wear class A uniforms. We should be done by 1:30 to 2:00pm. Thank you for all who sold tickets, donated supplies and special thanks to Eddie Partain in his lead in organizing this event.
Next Outing
Sweetwater Fall Camporee
November 4-6 Scoutland
We only have one meeting for this event October 24 as there is no meeting on October 31 Halloween.
The theme is Scottish games. We need scouts who are planning to go on this event to bring $10 for registration. A least have them know whether they can attend. We've had difficulty getting comittments on activities which makes meal planning and transportation needs difficult to determine. With the calendar posted months in advance, the scouts are expected to know if they can attend any particular function. Scouting is an outdoor program and they are shortchanging themselves if they are not taking advantage of the leadership and skills that can only be obtained in the outdoors.

Troop 81 BBQ Chicken Fundraiser Deadline Monday October 10
This is last chance to sell tickets to the chicken BBQ fundraiser on October 22. The troop needs these funds to buy and maintain camping equipment and fund activities. Have your Scout dress in uniform and see how quickly he is able to get his tickets sold! Give Money to Eddie Partain.

Okefenokee Trip was a great success! Led by our fearless SPL, Wesley Breedlove, our four Scouts (Austin Schorr, Ken Partain, Christopher Steele) and 4 adults powered through a 33 mile canoe journey into the East Coast's largest swamp. We camped 2 nights on platforms surrounded by miles of cypress trees, water fowl, and ever present alligators. The weather was perfect with cool nights and sunny 70 degree days. No one capsized, we ate well, and were thankful for Machete boy Ken Partain cutting a way through swamp for our canoes. What a great adventure!
OA Conclave Camp Rainey Mountain April 15-18. Hosted by Mowogo Lodge headed by Troop 81's own Christopher Steele as current lodge chief, sponsored a gathering of over 1,000 Arrowmen from throughout Georgia, Alabama at Camp Rainey Mountain. Indain dancing, drums, ceremonies, games and great fun and fellowship was had by all. Mr Thompson, Ms Elaine, Mr Steele, Mr Sewell all worked tireless to make the camp ready for this huge gathering. Austin, Matthew and Scott Schorr represented Troop81 as well.
Next Event Sweetwater Camporee April 30-May 1 Located at Scoutland, The goal of the camporee is for the scouts to build a raft entirely out of recycled materials and sail it across the lagoon. Prized for Best time, best construction, and other catagories. Registration fee is $15 dollars. All scouts asked to bring recycled bottles, jugs, 2 litters to next 2 meetings to build our raft.
Elections for SPL ASPL are to be either this next Monday April 18 or April 25 depending on turn out. Leadership is important for rank advancement. Leaders should be committed to showing up and guiding activites, especially Summer Camp.
New Summer Camp dates. Due to scheduling conflicts by several of the Scouts, The week of Summer Camp has been moved to July 17-July23. The adult leaders made this change to allow the maximum number of boys to attend Summer Camp. Not only is this camp the highlight of the year for fun and games, it is vitally important for earning merit badges essential for rank advancement. Please check these dates and commit your scout to this wonderful experience. $90 is needed immediately to secure your Scouts wished for badges.
May 15 Roswell Car show fund raiser. We plan to help set up and sell prepared food and drinks to raise money for the troop. Our troop needs additional funds to buy equipment and help offset the cost of new activities
June 10-12 Camp Rotary Water Fun Camp Out. Plan to enjoy the clear waters of Lake Hartwell. This a great time to get signed off on the swim test to allow better access to swim times at summer camp.
June 9-22 Philmont High adventure camp. Matthew, Austin and Scott Schorr, John and Lee Rowell will travel to Philmont in New Mexico with Scouts of the Northeast Georgia Council. This group has been preparing over the last 6 months with overnight hikes on the Appalacian trail at Unicoi Gap and Hikes up to Standing Indian Mountain. Troop 81 New Year Calendar
The Adult leaders of troop 81 met January 4 and worked out the calendar for the first half of the year. This is not an easy undertaking as our troop draws from at least 4 different school districts and each district has its own calendar. Also we try to plan around holidays to minimize impact on family schedules and travel plans. Also we try to avoid conflicts with OA events so that our troop members don't have to chose between which activity to participate. These date are subject to change as conditions and circumstances come up. For the Scout and parent, these activities are always listed on the white board above the fireplace in the Scout Hut. Please review these dates and try to incorporate them into the scouts schedule. As we announced at the court of honor, attendance this last year on weekend activities was disappointing. To get the most out of the program and to help with their advancement, Scouts should attend as many weekend events as possible, even if coming after other necessary obligations. Sometimes a one hour basketball game or soccer match will not prevent participation in weekend scout event.
